It’s like a girly version of The Snowman.
-
What’s that? Like Frosty? with the corncob pipe?
-
-
To be a child! I love Chrissy’s imagination!
-
:) The swings were so great for escaping into a daydream.
-
-
I can feel the autumn breeze now…mmm pumpkin-flavored things.

Just delightful. I love the geese looking down at Chrissie. Another beautiful post.
-
Thank you! I love/hate Canada geese. They are so pretty, but so big and mean.
-
-
Nicole, I think this absolutely one of your best so far! Fabulous! :)
-
Thanks :D I loved making it.
-
I agree! I think it is one of your best thus far too.
Please keep them coming! I’m glad you have so much fun making them.

This is the most awesome thing ever!

Haha! Thanks! I guess you really love autumn, too?

This is fantastic, as always! I love the artwork, but I also love how so many of your posts remind me of when me and my sister were kids! :D
-
Thanks! I’m happy to hear they can be so evocative!
-
-
I LOVE this! To be a kid again. That really is how it felt.
-
Thank you! I love making these because I feel like I get to slip back in time for a bit while I work.
-
-
Ah–loved this one! The colors, the pumpkins, the memories of being a kid again.
-
Thank you! All the seasons have their own palette, but I love fall’s the best.
-
-
:) Love it! I still love to go on the swings at the park and playgrounds!
-
Me, too!
-
-
I’m always so impressed how tapped in you are to a child’s mind! It’s perfect, as always.
-
Thank you :)
-
-
That was so much fun! I need to go out and find me a swing to swing on. ;-)
-
Yes, I highly recommend it!
-
-
As with every post, I love this!!! You have capture the best essence of childhood. So glad I found your blog!
-
Thanks :)

This is just adorable. I look forward to your posts and reliving childhood again. Your artwork is lovely and the stories they tell are sweet, and usually hysterical. Thanks!

Thank you, Sara :)

Thanks, Smashley!

Beautiful story–the pictures say it all. :)
-
Thanks, Emily :)

This is the best thing I’ve seen all day. And I even received notification of a forgiven parking ticket. This beats that. :)
-
Haha! Are you sure? Parking ticket forgiveness seems a rare and beautiful thing!

Thank you!

Gorgeous work and a lovely memory :) I love the ducks.

Thank you! They were fun to make. I love when I have just the right paper :)

aaah… i actually closed my eyes with her and felt her lightness! brilliant!
-
It’s such a good feeling to be swept away by
-
-
Perfect! That’s exactly how it feels to swing…except now that I’m older, it mainly makes me feel sick.
-
Me, too. How sad.

The Middle Sister,
Fantastic. Dude(tte), your art would make such a beautiful banner for A Clown on Fire…
Le Clown-
Hahaha! Thanks
-
Nicole,
…And you laugh…
Le Clown-
What do I do? What kind of illustration? Will a simple Clown on Fire suffice, or should it be something else?
-
Nicole,
It’s my way of saying I’m a big fan of your blog, and art. Don’t take Le Clown’s passive aggressiveness too seriously, even though I’d die for a banner by you… Die being a big word as I do love my life, but I’d probably get a few more gray hair… In a good way…
Le Clown-
Oh well, you weren’t around when I made everyone’s avatars, and I’m afraid I’ve already started working on it.
-
Nicole,
So I should tell my kids they should be all excited for their dad?? Please say it is so!
Le Clown-
Ha… that sounds sarcastic, but check your twitter.

I’ve been enjoying your blog for the past year, and it’s long past time I told you how much I enjoy both your artwork and your imagination. I just love this post – particularly the flight with the geese and the “surprise” ending. :-)
-
Thanks, Diane :)

Love the hair and the joyous abandon.
-
Thank you! I love moving hair. It’s so fun

I remember one time, I was at the park near my high school (I think it was at lunch time or after school or something), and a private-school group came in. One little girl started swinging on the swing on her stomach, like Chrissy is doing, and the teacher snapped at her to “sit on the swing properly, or don’t use it at all.” Some adults just don’t remember what it’s like to be a kid.
-
She would have hated to see me swing! My favorite was standing on the seat to swing.
-
-
My sister and friends sooooo used to do this. For hours, I remember. It never took much to keep us happy. Depicted beautifully with paper and cut-outs, as usual.
-
:) It’s a nice way to pass time!
-
-
Luv the scarecrow and the pumpkin patch
-
Thanks! My husband just put a horrible, scary scarecrow in our yard yesterday. I’m worried it’s going to give our elderly neighbors a heart attack.
-
-
Wonderful!
-
Thank you! :)
-
-
What great artistic and creative skill you have! (LOVE the colors!)
-
Thank you, I’m glad you like it!

I simply love it! So sweet and poetic!

i love it! and swings make me so happy, even at the age of 23
-
It’s so peaceful…
-
-
Love this! I love the geese looking back at Chrissy like, “Who are you?”
-
Thanks! It made me laugh when I made it. Yes, I often laugh at my own jokes.
-
-
Oh, how you make me pine for my childhood. What lovely pictures!
-
Thank you, Monica!

-
I was just showing my 6 and 4 year old girls this the other day! I get a little dizzier these days, but hey, ain’t that the point? ;)
-
Haha, yes!

Reblogged this on Ramblings of a Misguided Blonde and commented:
One of the best yet! -
This is absolutely enchanting, Nicki! You absolutely nailed it on the swinging motions. And what kid didn’t want to believe he was flying? I am in love with this post.
In other news, I’ve been away from the blogosphere for a while — like a whole entire week. So long that I tried to type in The Middlest Sister and my browser didn’t recognize the name but instead pulled up The Middlest Sister @ Blogspot. I kept scrolling through the homepage thinking, what is this? What has Nicki done to her site? How long have I been away? What the hell is going on?
I’m so glad I found you.

Hi Angie! I haven’t been commenting much lately because I am concentrating on my manuscript and trying to fill out my illustration portfolio, but I stopped by Childhood Relieved to see What the… Friday was. But it was NOTHING! What the…?? :D My own browser has taken me to that blogspot blog once or twice, and it is jarring. This is not my beautiful header. This is not my beautiful life. Well, how did I get here?
-
Oh cuh-rap. I was hoping no one would notice the absence of last week’s WTF.
Those are easy posts to slap up there but my excuse is I got waaaay behind in putting together my 3 year old’s birthday party that day. It was family-only for crying out loud. But I still had to make a meal and a cake from scratch. Why must I torture myself so?The good news is I accidentally ran across the worst music video (and, no, it’s not Once in a Lifetime) that I’d never seen before and I’m anxious to share it this Friday. Stay tuned.
Manuscript? Portfolio? Exciting!

-
What a lovely lift of autumn memories! The scarecrow looks concerned on the downswing, but no worries – she’s just gathering steam for the next flight.
A manuscript? How exciting! Best of luck, Nicki.
-
Thanks :) It’s a graphic novel I’ve been tinkering away at, featuring the girls of The Middlest Sister. I’m on my 8th draft, haha… the 9th coming soon, no doubt.

You have a stunning ability to capture a moment, a mood and an entire state of mind in a way that transcends language even when you do use a few words. It is a pure joy.

I love the lyrical quality to this. This is my favorite one so far. Autumn is my favorite season and my best memory of it is breathing in that cool air as you head out the door. How I miss it …
-
wow this is a real swinging post
-
TUZ LOVES YOU!!!!

How did I miss this one? I love it! That’s two new Middest Sisters in two days for me. Best week ever!
