Gee, I did that. Was there something wrong with it?

    1. Nicole Smeltzer Avatar

Naaaah… :) I used to get so mad at Chrissy for doing this. So embarrassing!

  2. becomingcliche Avatar

This might just be my favorite post. I love the work you did on the saleroom floor! If I had a Facebook to like you on, I totally would!

    1. Nicole Smeltzer Avatar

Thanks :) I only wish the saleroom floor could have been bigger than just 584 pixels wide!

  3. sj Avatar

    Hee! This makes me smile.

    1. Nicole Smeltzer Avatar

Thanks, SJ. You make me smile :D

  4. sweetmother Avatar

    awesome, once again…

  5. Balsillie & Associates Avatar

Reminds me of me and my brother growing up

    1. Nicole Smeltzer Avatar

Oh, no! Did you both hide?

      1. Balsillie & Associates Avatar

All the time; what’s worse, I’m disabled – so a bit of a extra scare for mom….but we were only kids hehe

The number of times I lost my niece in the department store because she would magically become part of some display! These grey hairs are from her.

    1. Nicole Smeltzer Avatar

Haha! My daughter has tried it a few times, but I can always hear her giggling to herself.

  7. rollergiraffe Avatar

Ha! I used to do this all the time when I was a kid. And it was hilarious until my own son pulled the same on me the other day. Now I think it is terrible and cruel. But oh, the middle of the circular clothing rack, you are so safe and warm.

    1. Nicole Smeltzer Avatar

Okay, I MIGHT have done it once or twice, so I do understand the appeal :) The cosiness and feeling of security…

  8. speaker7 Avatar

    Supreme hiding place. Loved it!

    1. Nicole Smeltzer Avatar

It is way better than standing on top of a toilet seat in a public restroom.

  9. Dounia Avatar

This is hilarious. And her expression when she finally gets called is priceless. It’s amazing how you make the facial expressions so perfectly!

    1. Nicole Smeltzer Avatar

Thanks :) Sometimes I practice making faces in front of the mirror.

  10. muddledmom Avatar

Thank goodness my kids haven’t done this to me yet! But I certainly remember doing it as a kid. I didn’t wait long enough to be paged though. Great memory, great post.

    1. Nicole Smeltzer Avatar

Me neither, which is what made me so mad when Chrissy would do it. That kid had no sense of propriety!

  11. becca3416 Avatar

I miss being a kid. Just kidding, I did this at Forever 21 just this weekend.

love!!! did you use real wire for the hangers?

    1. Nicole Smeltzer Avatar

      Yes! And never again! haha

  13. morristownmemos by Ronnie Hammer Avatar

Ah, the memories. There must be a gene for doing this to our families.

    1. Nicole Smeltzer Avatar

Hmm, you may be on to something…

  14. pegoleg Avatar

Oh Nicki, my then-2-year-old daughter did this is a crowded mall at Christmas and I thought I was going to have a heart attack. Great, great expressions (as usual)!

    1. Nicole Smeltzer Avatar

Ah! I would have had a panic attack!

  15. iRuniBreathe Avatar

I love how everyone learns the same hiding tricks, the same panic-inducing fear tactics to play on their parents, and the same bewildered response.
Love your lively sister. She looks great.

  16. GiggsMcGill Jill Avatar

Omg this brought back memories!! =D I used to love doing this! (I’ll admit, I’m not quite cool enough to keep doing it…)
And I LOVE your animations! They are spectacular!!

    1. Nicole Smeltzer Avatar

Thank you! I always laugh when I stumble upon a kid hiding in the racks in a department store.

  17. This Sydney Life Avatar

Sending this one to MY sister (who was the one who did this as a child)…

    1. Nicole Smeltzer Avatar

Ha! I hope she likes it!

  18. dpbowman Avatar

Ooooooooh, round racks in a department store! Best. Story. Ever: My sister, at the very self-important age of 13, is shopping in Deb. My dad gets down on all fours, crawls through a circular rack and starts mooing like a cow!
She still turns red when we tell this story. (Sorry sis….nah, not really) [I can soooo picture this as you would illustrate it too!] :D

    1. Nicole Smeltzer Avatar

hahahahaha! That is a good one!

  19. She's a Maineiac Avatar

Excellent! My poor mom, always dealing with my brothers and me all running off and hiding. There was just something so fun and magical about hiding in those racks. Of course, me kids do this now. Payback. Everything comes full circle.

    1. Nicole Smeltzer Avatar

That full circle thing is NOT fun. I was an insufferable know-it-all as a child. Now I have 3 year old who knows EVERYTHING and is constantly correcting me. So great.

I totally did this when I was a kid. Great job, Nicki. :)

    Childhood memories in 1..2..3.

Wow, I think you just hit the nail on the head!

HAHAHAHAHA! I’ve never forgotten this game, i’m always terrified Jakob will discover it!

    1. Nicole Smeltzer Avatar

      What?! I can’t believe he hasn’t yet!

  23. Go Jules Go Avatar

    HA! YOUR POOR MOTHER. Oy.

  24. timmer Avatar

    Yup, this was (cough*still*cough) me.

    1. Nicole Smeltzer Avatar

hahaha! I bet your mother dreads taking you shopping.

  25. Indian Ad Divas Avatar

    You are simply amazing!!!

  26. bhbkidstylebhbkidstyle Avatar

Oh, yes! My kids do something similar. Only they keep an I on my moves (they change hiding locations as I move around the shop). The good thing about this “method” that I don’t get stressed where they are. I just start queuing at the check out and when it is my turn to pay they join me.

When I was a kid, there was a certain children’s clothing store in the mall that had a ball pit–of course, it’s long since been gone, and replaced with a Gap store instead. Anyway, my mom would take me and my brother there, and we’d play in the ball pit while she picked out our clothes. The only drawback was, a lot of the clothes at that store were UGLY, so we had a choice–we could either play in the ball pit for the time we were in the store, or have input into wardrobe decisions that’d affect us until we outgrew or wore out the clothes. That’s a pretty stressful decision to make when you’re five or six.

  27. Tori Nelson Avatar

Awesome post :) I’ve only been paged over store intercoms once. I should add that throughout my childhood I was left at drive-thrus and Wal-Marts more times that I can count :)

  28. Ashley Austrew Avatar

That’s pretty much how I spent my childhood.

    1. Nicole Smeltzer Avatar

Hahaha! I’d love to read “A Memoir of a Childhood Spent in the Clothes Racks.”

  29. MB Avatar

I don’t remember ever doing this, but my children have started to love hiding in the clothes at department stores.

  30. Angie Z. Avatar

Aw, I miss that splendid place! Hey, wait a minute…maybe I could take my iPad in there and check out for the day?

  31. brittjarvi Avatar

This was very amusing and i loved it so. It reminds me of when i was younger and liked to hide in small places at the stores so no one could find me. Its probably one of the best things a kid does at the store. I know that i loved doing that and watching my brother trying to find me. Another fun thing that was fun to do in the stores was get in a shopping cart and let my brother push me really fast like a racing car. You should make a picture thing based on that. Just a thought. Anyways i loved this it was amazing it made my day!!

Hope you have a wonderful day! :)
